Store Sales Y/Y change4.4 %4.5 %

Same store sales were up 4.5 percent year-on-year in the September 9 week, continuing the acceleration of the prior three weeks to reach the strongest gain since December 2015. Month-to-date sales were up 0.3 percent, up for the third consecutive week after 7 weeks of negative readings, and year-on-year full month sales were up 4.4 percent, matching last week's reading as the strongest in at least two years. The increasingly stronger same store sales growth reported by retailers in Redbook's sample over the last 7 weeks shows the consumer at last translating the optimism recorded in surveys into purchases, and points to strength in ex-auto ex-gas sales in this Friday's Retail Sales report for August.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
