Consumer spending may have been soft in May but the first glimpse of June is positive. Unit vehicle sales jumped to a 17.5 million annualized pace that easily tops Econoday's high estimate and points at strength for the motor vehicle component of the June retail sales report which will be released at mid-month. The month's strength is centered in domestic-made vehicles which sold at a 13.6 million rate vs 13.0 million in May. Threats of auto tariffs didn't pull forward sales for imports which came in unchanged at a 3.9 million rate.

Consensus Outlook
A 17.0 million annualized rate is the consensus for unit vehicle sales in June, a moderate-to-solid outcome that would compare with 16.9 million in May and hint at another constructive month for the auto component of the retail sales report.

Unit sales of motor vehicles, published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the beginning of each month, include domestic sales and imports. Domestics are sales of autos produced in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Imports are U.S. sales of vehicles produced elsewhere. The data track all passenger cars and light trucks up to 14,000 pounds gross weight (including minivans and sport utility vehicles). Though totals include a relatively small portion sold to businesses, motor vehicle sales are good indicators of trends in consumer spending and often are considered a leading indicator at business cycle turning points.  Why Investors Care
