Highlights
Unit vehicle sales proved surprisingly weak in July, at a 16.8 million annualized rate vs 17.2 million in June. This is the lowest rate since August last year but it will be the comparison with June that will pull down forecasts for July's retail sales report. Vehicles were a valuable contributor to the monthly retail sales reports throughout the second quarter, but today's results point to a flat opening for the third-quarter. Vehicle sales make up about one-fifth of total retail sales. Weakness was split between imports, at a 3.7 million rate vs June's 3.8, and domestic-made, at 13.1 million vs 13.4.

Consensus Outlook
A 17.1 million annualized rate is the consensus for total unit vehicle sales in July, a solid outcome that, however, would compare with a 17.5 million pace in June which easily topped Econoday's consensus range. Though July's rate is expected to be strong, the month-to-month comparison with June's strength could point to weakness for the motor vehicle component of the retail sales report. Domestic-made vehicles are expected to sale at a 12.9 million vs May's 13.6 million.

Definition
Unit sales of motor vehicles include domestic sales and foreign sales, otherwise referred to as imports. Domestics are sales of autos produced in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Imports are U.S. sales of vehicles produced elsewhere. These are for light vehicles which include all passenger cars and light trucks up to 14,000 pounds gross weight (including minivans and sport utility vehicles). Individual manufacturers usually report sales on the first business day of the month. One of the first tabulators of the data is Autodata Corporation. Motor vehicle sales are good indicators of trends in consumer spending and often are considered a leading indicator at business cycle turning points. One should note that manufacturers do not break out vehicle sales to businesses, which are a smaller but still significant percentage of the monthly total.  Why Investors Care
