Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain-store sales don't appear to be quite as strong as Redbook and especially ICSC-UBS were reporting during the month. Warm weather did help to move seasonal goods, but many stores said warm weather in June stole sales from July. Giant discounters Wal-Mart and, as usual, Target showed good gains, but several department stores, including Kohl's and JC Penny, posted mediocre to poor results. Even several top performers, like department chain Nordstrom, posted comparatively soft results. Also many less followed discounters, such as Fred's and Dollar Tree, posted weak results. Today's results aren't likely to drive up expectations for next Thursday's retail sales report.
