Monster collects job postings from 1,500 web sites (including Monster.com) and creates an index of job availability, akin to The Conference Board's help wanted index. The monster employment index added to gains in January, at 122 in February vs. 120 and compared with 113 in December.
Manufacturing was the strongest of 20 industries. The results confirm Tuesday's solid reading in the ISM manufacturing employment index and may raise quiet expectations for the manufacturing category of February's payroll data.
The monster index is new and won't have any effect on the financial markets, but it fits with a growing list of data -- including jobless claims and most recently the help-wanted index -- that point to better job-market conditions.
