Monster Employment Index
Definition
Monster collects job postings from 1,500 web sites (including Monster.com) and creates an index of job availability, akin to The Conference Board's help wanted index. The difference between the two is that one collects help wanted advertising from newspapers and the other collects from online posting. The Monster index is not seasonally adjusted. Why Investors Care

Released on 10/6/05 For Sep 2005
Monster Employment Index
 Actual 140

Highlights
The Monster Employment Index slipped only 2 points to 140 in September, still a strong level consistent with growth, not contraction, in monthly payroll data on Friday. Online job demand in the Gulf Area dropped sharply because of the hurricanes, but demand elsewhere was strong.

Construction jobs were especially in demand, consistent with data from yesterday's ISM non-manufacturing report and pointing to immediate rebuilding demand. Retail trade was also strong as the group gears up for the holidays (note data are not seasonally adjusted). Manufacturing dipped, perhaps a surprise given strength in the ISM's manufacturing survey.

The Monster results won't change expectations for a 150,000 fall in non-farm payrolls, but they are a reminder that, for the most part, it was business as usual for the nation's jobs market.
