Monster collects job postings from 1,500 web sites (including Monster.com) and creates an index of job availability, akin to The Conference Board's help wanted index. Highlights
The Monster employment index jumped sharply in February, to 177 vs. 168 in January for the sharpest month-to-month increase in the four-year history of the report. Strength was broad based as all regions and nearly all industries showed improvement. But two areas of weakness, hitting blue-collar demand, were flat showings for residential construction and manufacturing.
The report is narrow, tracking only online demand for workers. Still, it offers a contrast to other indications on the month's labor market which are mostly soft. Jobless claims for the March 3 week will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET.
